Today’s security systems look nothing like they did a decade ago. With technological advancements, security systems have come a long way, now providing smartphone integration, real-time video surveillance, and the ability to go wireless.
While security systems used to be connected to traditional landlines, nowadays they connect to wireless networks or cellular services such as Verizon and AT&T. These services are continuously updating, changing, most recently from 3G/4G to LTE.
There are many benefits that come with the advancement toward LTE that 3G and 4G have not been able to provide, higher-speed communication, better call stability, higher call quality, and enhanced video monitoring.
However, as LTE becomes the new standard for wireless communication technology, 3G / 4G is being phased out, and they’re calling it the 3G/4G Sunset.
What Impact Does the 3G/4G Sunset Have on Security Systems?
This advancement means that any device without LTE will lose their ability to send alarms to the monitoring center. Some carriers like Verizon have announced they will stop supporting their entire 3G network by the end of 2020. AT&T is not far behind, ending services by 2021. All providers will not be able to support 3G/4G by 2022.
Newer SEi security systems are already using LTE, however, LTE service has only been available for the last year or so. This means that if your security system is more than a year old it is more than likely affected by the 3G/4G Sunset.
Older systems will no longer be able to communicate with our in-house monitoring center. Your alarm can still go off locally, but the monitoring center will not know to call the police or send help in case of an emergency.
Ask SEi to Upgrade Your Security System Today!
Security Equipment Inc. is prepared to upgrade your system to LTE. If you already have SEi equipment, reach out to us to install our LTE Cellular Upgrade Kit. We can upgrade your current cell communicator whether you are a current SEi customer or not, so you won’t have to worry about losing connectivity during the 3G/4G Sunset.
If you choose to wait, your system will not communicate with our monitoring center after the 3G/4G Sunset occurs. As previously mentioned, each cellular provider is phasing out 3G/4G at different times, but we recommend you upgrade your system soon.
Don’t be stuck without connection. Upgrade your security system to LTE today and stay connected. You’ll also reap the benefits of faster and clearer video and audio when you upgrade your cellular capabilities.
