Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a serious threat to you and your home. This odorless and colorless gas can cause severe harm and even death without warning.

According to the CDC, more than 400 Americans die annually from CO poisoning unrelated to fires in the United States. Over 14,000 people are hospitalized due to CO poisoning each year. According to US Facts, Nebraska had one of the highest numbers of CO poisoning deaths (0.5 per 100,000 people) from 2016-2020.

Symptoms of CO Poisoning

Symptoms of CO poisoning are often flu-like and include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Chest pains

While CO poisoning can affect anyone. Infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory issues can be more susceptible.

Preventing CO Poisoning

Here are some steps to prevent CO poisoning in your home:

1. Install a CO Detector

  • Install a CO detector in your home, preferably near sleeping areas. Also put a CO detector near the areas where CO might originate, like close to the garage. SEi recommends one on each livable area of the home at a minimum. Choose between a battery-operated detector or one with a battery backup. Replace your CO detector every five years.

2. Check Your Oil and Gas Furnaces and Appliances

  • Have a certified technician inspect gas, oil, or coal-burning appliances annually. Ensure gas appliances are properly vented, with horizontal pipes pointing outdoors. Purchase gas equipment with a seal from a national testing agency. If you smell odors from a gas-powered appliance, it could indicate a CO leak—get it checked. Never use a gas oven to heat your home and never cook without proper ventilation.

3. Do Not Use Portable Generators Indoors

  • Never use a portable generator inside your home, even with windows open. Use generators outdoors, keeping them at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, and windows.

4. Have Proper Ventilation in Your Attached Garage

  • Never run your car or truck in an attached garage, even if the garage door is open. In fact, avoid prolonged usage of any gas-powered device inside the attached garage.
